Rhine River

Together with its tributaries, Main and Mosel, the Rhine is by far the most significant river route in Europe. It originates in Switzerland near Reichenau at the confluence of Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein in the Swiss Alps at a height of 2,344 meters (7,690 feet). From Reichenau, the Rhine flows, as the Alpenrhein, to the north before it empties into the Lake of Constance. When it emerges again from the Lake of Constance the river is called Hochrhein which passes the Rhine Falls before it is joined by the river Aar and turns to the so called “Rhine Knee” at Basel. The Rhine is 1,320 kilometers (820 miles) long and borders on its way all along to the North Sea on Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands.
